Valiente lagoon

The Valiente lagoon is the lagoon that is located at a shortest distance from the commune of San Fabián de Alico, this walk is a very good activity for almost all types of public. We will walk from the Maitenal sector or from the upper sector of Valiente through the native forest until we reach a beautiful lake surrounded by an old forest of coigües, guindo santo and white granite walls. An excursion that allows you to be filled with natural beauty, tranquility and learn a lot about the native flora due to the great variety of ecosystems.

We will meet in the main square or at your accommodation at 8:00 am and we will head northwest to the Maitenal sector. In this place our adventure will begin, with 2 possible itinerary options.

Option 1: This is the shorter alternative, ideal for families with children. We will travel a distance of approximately 4 kilometers in a 4×4 vehicle (consider an additional cost for transportation if you do not have a 4×4 vehicle), until we reach the “Brillo de Luna” campsite. We will begin to walk through the native forest, observing the flora and fauna, enjoying the pure air and the peace that surrounds us. Along the trail grow tree species such as hualo (Nothofagus glauca), canelo (Drimys winteri), mountain range cypress (Austrocedrus chilensis), lingue (Persea lingue), mañío (Podocarpus salignus), coigüe (Nothofagus dombeyi), myrtle (Luma apiculata), hazelnut (Gevuina avellana), among others. In spring and autumn, intertwined in the foliage of the trees, the pink flowers of the copihues (Lapageria rosea) stand out. Perhaps we will be able to hear the hammering of black woodpeckers (Campephilus magellanicus) and the song of chucaos (Scelorchilus rubecula). We will calmly climb to a first break at the Valiente waterfall, a beautiful waterfall over 4 meters high, inserted in a magical environment, between ferns, nalcas (Gunnera tinctoria) and chilcos (Fuchsia magellanica). Then we will continue climbing through more rocky parts, observing how the vegetation changes as we climb, appearing chaguales (Puya spp) and cypress from the mountain range, until we reach a beautiful lake surrounded by an old forest of coigües and white granite walls. In summer you will be able to admire the flowers of the holy cherry (Eucryphia glutinosa), a tree that presents conservation problems (vulnerable according to the Species Classification Regulation). Before going down, we will enjoy the place to eat the picnic, rest, bathe and admire the landscape: the lake, the granite walls on the hills and the huge trunks of the Coigües. In the first part of the loop of our circuit, we will pass through a cobblestone, from which we can have a clear view of the valley where the lagoon is located and the hills that surround it, highlighting among them the Valiente hill, the Cuernos de Diablo and the Alto el Padre hill. Then we will calmly go down to the campsite.

Option 2: This is the longer alternative, ideal for athletes, and does not require transportation in a 4×4 vehicle. From the “Los Robles” campsite located in the Maitenal sector, our route will begin with a short section of walk, during the first 800 meters of the path, between pine and eucalyptus plantations. Then we will continue walking through the native forest, observing the flora and fauna, enjoying the pure air and the peace that surrounds us. Halfway there, after approximately 4 kilometers, we will have the possibility of stopping to rest at the Valiente waterfall, a beautiful waterfall of more than 4 meters high that is a must to visit. Then we will calmly go down to the campsite. The second day in the morning we will be able to rest and enjoy a sunrise in the mountain range. After a good breakfast in the middle of the mountain range, we will raise our campsite and begin our return journey, along the same path as the ascent.
